************ Q & A ************
Q: How do I know if my child or loved one could benefit from speech/language/cognitive/swallow therapy?
A: Your young child may benefit from an assessment if he is not demonstrating some basic speech/language milestones and seems to be "behind" his same-age peers. For two simple examples, the following milestones are seen in typical development:
* At 12 months the child is producing his first word, at 18 months he is producing 50 different words, and at 24 months he is putting 2 words together to make a variety of short sentences.
* A stranger can understand less than half what the child says at 2 years, about 50% at 3 years, and about 75% at 4 years of age.
If your adult loved one's communication, memory, thinking, or swallowing skills have changed due to a sudden or ongoing event, you may consider an evaluation.
Q: Is it possible to do an assessment and therapy via teletherapy?
A: Yes. Speech, language, cognitive, and even bedside swallowing assessment and treatment may be done via teletherapy. You only need a device with camera and audio (preferably larger than a cell phone), internet access, and a distraction-free space.
Q: If I am still unsure if an assessment is appropriate for my child or loved one, and I do not have a doctor's referral, do you offer a brief screening?
A: Yes; if you do not have a referral and are not sure if your child's speech/language skills are developing well or if he or she will be prepared to learn how to read due to difficulty with speech or language, please schedule a free screening.
If you or someone you love has experienced a stroke, brain injury, surgery, chronic disease, or some other event that has impacted his communication, cognitive, or swallowing skills, and you'd like to know if an assessment is appropriate, please schedule a free screening.
Q: How do early detection and treatment of speech/language challenges for my child support his later reading skills?
A: The link between oral and written communication skills is strong and well documented and researched. Put simply, the stronger a child's speech and language skills are at a young age (i.e.: 1-4 years), the stronger we can expect his reading and writing skills to be. This is why we love supporting young children with their oral language and speech!
Q: Do you accept private pay clients?
A: Yes, we are happy to accept payment directly from families (who do not have Medicare). For patients who have Medicare, we are required to bill Medicare for your services.
Q: Do you take insurance?
A: Yes; we accept HMSA Quest, PPO, HMO, and Advantage.
Q: Can you help people outside of Hawaii?
A: Yes, we are also licensed in California and can see people who live there via teletherapy.
